Narrow covered patios are one of the most common outdoor spaces in Brisbane's newer homes, and one of the most underestimated. With a bit of thought about layout and furniture choice, even a tight patio can comfortably seat eight people for dinner and still have a lounge area to relax in afterwards.
Judy and John moved into their new home in late 2020 and came to Lume looking for outdoor furniture to bring their patio to life. After weeks of sitting on camping chairs and eating at a tiny camping table while they waited for their home to come together, they were ready for something proper.
'We are over the moon with our new outdoor furniture. It's so nice to sit at a proper table after 6.5 weeks of sitting on low camping chairs and eating at a tiny camping table.'

The Challenge: A Narrow Patio With a Lot to Do
Their patio was narrow but long, with posts running down the middle of the space and a wall at one end. The challenge was fitting both a dining setting for up to eight and a lounge area without the space feeling cluttered or blocking the walkway.
The Layout Solution
The key was treating each section of the patio as its own zone:
- Dining between the posts. By positioning the dining table between two patio posts and placing two chairs along each side with one at each end, they created a defined dining zone that seats eight comfortably without dominating the whole space.
- Lounge along the end wall. The lounge chairs and side table were placed along the end wall, tucked neatly out of the main walkway. This kept the flow of the patio clear and gave the lounge area its own sense of place.
- Keeping the walkway open. By being deliberate about where each piece sat, Judy and John kept the central walkway clean and roomy, making the patio feel much larger than its footprint.

Why White Works So Well in Narrow Spaces
Judy and John chose white furniture throughout, and it was exactly the right call for their space. White and light grey tones reflect light rather than absorbing it, which makes a covered patio feel brighter and more open. The Hamptons-style aesthetic of their setting also brought a visual lightness to the space, complementing the tiles and wall colour beautifully.
If you're working with a narrow or covered patio, white outdoor furniture is one of the most reliable ways to keep the space feeling airy. Browse our white outdoor furniture collection for dining and lounge options that suit this style.

Top Tips for Narrow Covered Patios
Use Your Posts and Walls as Anchors
Structural elements like posts and walls are actually your friends in a narrow space. Use them to define zones rather than working around them. A dining table between posts creates a natural room-within-a-room effect, and a lounge against an end wall feels intentional rather than squeezed in.
Keep the Walkway Clear
In a narrow patio, the walkway is everything. Position furniture so there's always a clear path through the space. This makes the patio feel larger and more functional, especially when you're entertaining.
Mix Dining and Lounge in the Same Space
A covered patio that has both a dining area and a lounge area is far more versatile than one that only does one thing. The key is scale: choose a dining setting that fits the space without overwhelming it, and a lounge that tucks neatly into whatever is left.
Choose Light Colours Throughout
In a covered or shaded patio, dark furniture absorbs what little light there is and makes the space feel heavy. White, light grey, and natural tones keep things feeling fresh and open year-round.
