What happens to your teak in 2 years - the three options
Which Golden Care products to use for each result
Teak is one of the most beautiful and durable materials you can choose for outdoor furniture. But left untreated, it will naturally weather to a silver-grey patina over time. Some people love the aged look - but if you'd prefer to restore your teak to its original warm, honey tones and keep it looking its best year-round, this guide is for you.
Using three Golden Care products and about an afternoon of your time, you can bring weathered teak back to life. Here's how.
Before you start: grab an allen key and tighten all the bolts on your furniture. It's a good habit before any maintenance session and keeps everything sturdy. Then take a 'before' photo - the transformation is genuinely impressive and you'll want the comparison.
Step 1: Clean with Golden Care Teak Cleaner
The first step is to strip back the weathered grey surface using the Golden Care Teak & Hardwood Cleaner. This is the step that makes the biggest visual difference - it removes the silver-grey patina and opens the timber up for the next two steps.

How to use Golden Care Teak Cleaner
How to use:
- Wear eye protection and rubber gloves, and cover the ground beneath your work area.
- Moisten the furniture with water first.
- Shake the bottle well, then apply the Teak Cleaner with a soft sponge or cloth. Allow to soak for 3 minutes.
- Scrub in the direction of the grain with a scrubbing pad.
- Rinse thoroughly with water and allow to dry completely before moving to Step 2.
Step 2: Protect with Golden Care Teak Protector
Once the timber is clean and completely dry, it's time to apply the Golden Care Teak Protector. This is what locks in the natural colour and keeps your teak looking warm and fresh rather than fading back to grey.
Unlike teak oil - which can darken the timber to an unnatural brown - teak protector maintains the timber's natural honey tones. It's also 100% water-based, non-toxic, non-flammable, and resistant to mould, which means no greasy residue and no unsightly black spots developing over time. One application lasts significantly longer than teak oil, making it the smarter long-term choice.

How to use:
- Wear eye protection and rubber gloves.
- Make sure the teak is 100% dry and clean. If the surface feels rough after cleaning, sand lightly before applying.
- Shake and stir the Teak Protector for at least a minute before use - insufficient shaking can lead to uneven results.
- Apply a very thin, even layer using a clean lint-free cloth or sponge.
- After approximately 30 minutes, apply a second coat.
- Repeat at least once a year to maintain protection.
Step 3: Seal with Golden Care Teak Shield
The final step is applying the Golden Care Teak Shield - an almost invisible barrier that protects against food and drink stains including coffee, red wine, and oils. If you have a teak dining table, this step is especially important.
Teak Shield is water-based, easy to apply, and easy to clean up. It needs to be applied after the Teak Protector is completely dry.

- Shake well, then apply liberally with a paintbrush. Allow to dry for 24 hours, then reapply.
- Leave for 48 hours before any exposure to moisture.
- Reapply a few times a year, or whenever water stops beading on the surface - that's your sign it's time for another coat. Tabletops will need more frequent treatment than other surfaces.
