If you've been shopping for outdoor lounge furniture and found yourself wondering what the difference between a 4-piece and 5-piece set actually is, you're not alone. It's one of the most common questions we get — and the honest answer is: it depends.
Piece count isn't standardised
Unlike clothing sizes or mattress dimensions, there's no industry-wide rule for what counts as a "piece" in an outdoor lounge setting. At Lume, we count every individual physical item — so a set of two nested coffee tables counts as two pieces, not one. A setting with three individual lounge chairs counts as three pieces, not one.
This means a 5-piece setting from one brand might look completely different to a 5-piece setting from another — and even within our own range, two 5-piece settings can include a very different mix of pieces.
What actually matters more than the number
Rather than focusing on the piece count, we'd encourage you to look at what's actually included. A 5-piece setting might be:
- A 3-seater sofa, 2 armchairs, and a coffee table
- A 2-seater sofa, 2 armchairs, a footstool, and a coffee table
- A 3-seater sofa, an armchair, and a set of 2 nested coffee tables
All three are 5-piece settings — but they suit very different spaces and entertaining styles.
Questions to ask instead
When comparing settings, these are more useful questions than piece count:
- How many people do I need to seat comfortably?
- Do I want a footstool for relaxed lounging, or do I prefer a coffee table for practicality?
- Is a modular configuration better for my space so I can rearrange as needed?
- How much floor space do I have, and will all the pieces fit without crowding?
